What is Gardening for Good?

Gardening for Good is a network of local community gardens that builds upon the energy of the community garden movement, coordinates neighborhood redevelopment efforts, improves the health of residents and neighborhoods, and transforms Greenville through gardening.

Vision:  Sustain a network of flourishing gardens that cultivate community vitality, civic engagement, and access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food.

Mission: To foster communication, promote exchange of knowledge, facilitate stewardship of resources, and support advocacy efforts among Greenville County garden initiatives.

Primary Tasks and Roles

  • Build a network of community gardens. Although community gardens are popping up all over Greenville, the communication and collaboration between them is currently very limited and informal. Through community meetings, seminars, and conferences, Gardening for Good will be a primary connecting point for gardens, neighborhoods, volunteers, garden resource vendors and food suppliers.

  • Create a community garden resource center. The primary component of the community resource center is a robust, easy to use, yet deep web presence. The website is the primary connecting point between Gardening for Good constituencies. Additionally, a bi-monthly newsletter will be produced for network members and friends.

  • Develop a gardening education program. The education program is multi-faceted for audiences from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels.

  • Manage a tool bank. All too often, resources to buy tools for gardening are limited. This problem is especially pronounced in the community garden efforts of low-income neighborhoods. For this reason, a centrally located tool bank, possibly hosted by the St. Francis Community Garden, will provide tools Gardening for Good members may check out as needed for projects across Greenville County.
